Anatomy of a Look Book

In addition to our quarterly catalogues, we recently began publishing monthly Lookbooks to showcase our products in fun, playful environments with some really awesome kids! The experience has truly been blast and we've received such great feedback on the new lookbooks that we thought we'd give you, our VIPB's, a insiders peek into the creation of our latest Back-To-School LookBook!

What every Mom should know

With Mother's Day fast approaching we take some time to celebrate the glorious Mothers we have and that we are!

As a Mom, we are always learning, growing, teaching, assisting, perfecting, creating, supporting, protecting, listening, and celebrating... just to name a few. Mothers wear many hats and we want to take a moment to recognize a few of the things that make us so unique. The staff from the Peekaboo Beans Playground (our playful head office) compiled a list of a few important things that every Mother should know:

How to make a boo boo better
How to cut your child’s bangs
Where the nearest bathroom is
How to say No
How to perfectly cook homemade macaroni and cheese
How to pack for a weekend away all in one bag.
Where the nearest Starbucks is
What makes your kids laugh
How to sew on a missing button
Trust your instincts
Where to stash the backup crayons/coloring book in case of emergency
Know the words to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Know where your child is most ticklish
Where the wine is stocked!
Where all the drive-thru services are
That baby wipes aren't just for bums
How to pack the perfect ice-cream cone
PLAY
How to handle "potty talk" with a straight face
Understand the language of a 2 year old
How to scare away the boogieman
How to do 3 things at once with only 2 arms
Where the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa live
That you don't have to be perfect.

Happy Mothers Day to you all!

Life is good.

7 years later... and it's just the beginning.

In 2006 I founded Peekaboo Beans on the premise that all kids should play.  Play is the foundation for success in children.  So why not dress them for success in clothing that supports what they do best - play!

Fast forward 7 years and what a journey we are on.  Our loyal Beanaholics, the loving beans around the land, the stories, the moments shared of a Bean dressing themselves with pride!

The friends, the co-workers, the family I have made are momentous and literally life changing.  We could not do what we do, without you - our loyal VIPB's!

In 2006 I sat at a computer and literally created a website on power point (I think that is what it was). And when I say that to people who know me, laughs ensue - knowing my computer and graphic capabilities. But hey, you do what you have to do.

A good friend (who happens to be a graphic designer) and loyal devoted supporter of PB said to me one day - let me do this.  You need help.  Clearly I did. A new site was built and was buckets of beans better than what I had done.  That site evolved over the years.  It was pretty, but clunky.  But our fans prevailed and supported us a young company, just trying to spread the love of play. This week we did a face lift.  7 years later, a fresh look.  Clean.  Simple and important.  Let kids Play.

I hope you enjoy looking at our new fresh face.  Thank you to those who have seen the journey. This is our soft launch - as we look to continually improve and update, please come back and check out enhanced pages that are currently under construction.  Just remember - seven years later and this is only the beginning.

In love and play,

Traci Signature

Playful Beans and the meaning of Christmas

Ever wonder what the little Beans are thinking during the chaos on the holidays, the hustle and bustle of the shopping, the baking and storing of all the Christmas cookies, the sitting nicely on Santa's lap and everything else that comes along with this busy time of year?  In their world, what does "Christmas" mean?  Ever wonder? We certainly did, so... we asked our Beans. So we would like to share with you, straight from the mouths of the beautiful Beans of our Play Stylists and Playground staff, what Christmas means to them:

Nathan, age 5
Spending time with my family cause I have 2 weeks off on Christmas! Can you believe 2 weeks off?

Carys, age 2
Christmas!!! How our presents come out of the Christmas tree?

Nia, age 5
Opening the presents.

Aiyana, age 5
Having a snowball fight and eating gingerbread houses.

Lily, age 7
When Santa comes and when we go to see Santa. And when we get to wake up Christmas morning and open presents with our family.

Ethan, age 4
Opening up the presents. And sitting on Santa's lap.

Cohen, age 5
My favorite thing about Christmas is singing "I wish you a merry Christmas... Hallelujah!!!!! (Singing at the top of his voice in the highest possible octave)

Ava, age 9
I love that my family spends time together playing games, laughing, baking and skating. This means more to me than any presents.

Riley, age 5
Favorite thing about Christmas is getting candies from Harry, hanging Christmas lights and everything!  (Harry is the contractor who is finishing the siding on their house)  haha

Elliette, age 3
Favorite thing about Christmas is riding the horseys. (She asked for a barn full of horseys for Christmas)

Sarah, age 3
Making snowball fights. Making a giant carrot nose. Getting presents.

Rachel, age 5
Making snow angels. It's my favorite season, the bears are 'hardernated'. (Hibernated). I get to go out places and the whole spirit of christmas.

Kerlinda, age 7

What I like about Christmas is you care about people, its about spending time with people. Its not about presents its about caring about the birth of Jesus. (Yep, seriously...that was the answer. She didn't even break her gaze from the tv....lol)

And last but not certainly least... from Nora the puppy dog (who can't really talk but we know her mommy can completely understand her just by the way she looks at her with those big brown eyes!)

Nora, age 2
Falling snow, not so much snow on the ground, but when there is snow falling you can find me running in circles and rolling around licking up the flakes!  And of course the Christmas turkey dinner…a puppy sized plate of yams, turkey and peas please!

Happy Holidays from our Beans to yours!

Meet the Playground Staff

Ever wonder who is running the show?  What the "Playground" is?  How we become inspired and continue to create and grow?  Here's a quick behind the scenes look at all us ladies & Derrick (our sole brave man) who make up the team at the Peekaboo Beans Playground.

The Peekaboo Beans "Playground", located in Richmond, British Columbia, has been busy planting a unique and special working environment with a family first philosophy.  Together as a family we watch our garden grow and thrive through a strongly rooted value system.  Our garden grows when we fill it with like minded individuals, water it with positivity and embrace change.

Peekaboo Beans is a vine like no other as we support and promote a work life balance for Moms.  We believe that everyone deserves to be a mom but still be YOU, all while loving what you do each day.  With rejuvenating yoga classes, relaxing chair massage, super fun monthly play dates and even personal grocery shopping, Peekaboo Beans brings to bloom a true mommy mecca.

As we plant the seeds, add some water and watch it bloom we live by the vision of working culture specifically geared to what working mamma's need.  Imagine in-house daycare, shopping services, exercise facilities, spa services, meal preparation, and many more family support systems right at your finger tips.  This is MOM Inc.  A place where, through support and family values we can have every Mom arrive home happy, healthy and present for their special little Beans!

Bofrot by Akosua

Bofrot, Ghanaian goodness!

Akosua, our WOW girl at the Playground, keeps coming to work with these awesome little packages of goodness!  Never lasting more than a day, we all gobble them up like they are going out of style!  So fresh, so yummy and such a treat to enjoy an old Ghanaian tradition.  So we are thrilled that Akosua's Mother has allowed us to share her family Bofrot recipe with all of you.  Enjoy, and be forewarned... it's hard to eat just one!

Bofrot -
1/2 cup warm water
1.5 oz sugar (3 Tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon)
1/3 egg (I beat a large egg, poured it in a 1/4 cup measuring cup, then poured out 1/3 of it)
1 teaspoon yeast (I happened to have rapid rise yeast, so used that)
4 oz of bread flour (higher gluten content than regular white flour) [that's about 1/2 c plus 1/3 cup unsifted flour]
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 t baking powder
pinch of salt
oil for deep-frying (I used canola)

Mix dough together gently and knead into a ball, cover and let rest in a bowl for at least 2 hours.  When you are ready, heat up the oil and drop it spoonful size into the deep fryer.  Fry until golden brown, remove from oil and rest on paper towel.  Cool and enjoy!

The power of Acknowledgement

Kindness and acknowledgement can go a long way in this world and we at Peekaboo Beans are strong believers of recognizing our fellow bean-mates for their generosity, good deeds and overall good human nature.  It really makes it a unique and inspiring place to work and be.

Perhaps it's for reasons like this that we have dubbed our head office "the playground"!

Your friends from the Playground

Curious to where all the magic beans happen? We are opening our doors and giving you a glimpse into the world of Peekaboo Beans. Come see the center of our tire swing, the bars of our monkey cage, the bumps on our slide, the pebbles in our sandbox... come join us at our Playground!

How long have you been with Peekaboo Beans?
Though I don't know the "official" amount of time, I believe its been around 3-4 months. I started just coming in here and there, when an extra set of hands were needed.

Whats your role?
I am now the peekaboo beans stunt double. Meaning I sub in for invoicing, charging and warehouse help.

Whats your favorite things about being on the PB’s team?
The atmosphere. I love how I get genuinely excited to come to work. It's a happy place to be.

Whats the craziest thing that’s happened at the playground?
I don't think I've been around long enough to witness anything truly "crazy".

What inspires you?
Everyday random acts of kindness. I try my best to make someone smile everyday, and it's always nice to see someone else doing it too.

What do you do in your spare time?
Read, write, doodle, or curl up on the couch with some tea and watch a movie :)

What were you like as a child?
I was a major Tomboy. I was also one of those kids that if I sat still too long I'd get antsy. I was very active.

What’s one thing that people may not know about you?
I love writing. Especially poetry. I've gone downtown on occasion and performed in slam poetry nights. I've also been a finalist in several short story contests.

What does PLAY mean to you?
Play to me means, expression through activity. Whether it's something creative, imaginitive or even through sports. I think you can learn a lot about a person by how they play.

Peekaboo Beans loves our interns!!

At our playground there is always something exciting going on.  Whether that's designing the new collection, organizing pop up play dates, collecting and organizing clothing drives for the less fortunate, co-ordinating fashion camps, attending leadership conferences, getting ready to launch our tween line or setting up meetings with our growing vine of Play Stylists, one thing we LOVE to stay involved in is having a few Beans in Training!  Peekaboo Beans is proud to sponsor local University  Fashion, Design and Marketing students and give them the opportunity to spread their wings and learn in action.  Our interns are always so helpful, creative, dedicated and inspired, and we do everything we can to help these lovely beans who come to us to expand their knowledge.  In the past few months we have been blessed to share our playground with a number of students and would like the opportunity to introduce them to you and thank these hard working ladies for all their wonderful support.  We wish you all the best for your future!

How long have you been with PB’s?
I started at PB in January of 2008 as a Fashion Intern from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. I continued working part time with PB as I finished school and have been a full time employee since the summer of 2010.
Whats your role?
My main role these days is the design and brand development of Peekaboo Beans NEW tween line, CiCi Bean –which launches in September 2012! You can also find me creating e-blasts and marketing material for sales, events, and holidays!
Whats your favorite things about being on the PB’s team?
There are so many wonderful reasons why I love being on the PB team but one of my all time favorite things is our theme days! Working with people who share my passion for dress up is so FUN!
Whats the craziest thing that’s happened at the playground?
The playground usually gets pretty crazy around the times that we launch a new collection! New stock arrives in hundreds of boxes, orders begin to ship out, and the design team is in the midst of creating the collection for the following year! Then add in kids screaming, puppies barking, and phones ringing. It’s definitely a little bit CRAZY!
What inspires you?
People…I’m so inspired by peoples personal style and creativity. I’m intrigued by peoples uniqueness and their ability to deal with the hardships in their own lives. I get such a strong sense of happiness when the people around me succeed and it continually pushes me to believe more in myself.
What do you do in your spare time?
If it’s a Sunday morning you can find me on Pinterest or reading my favorite blogs. I’m always cooking and just as often eating. I spend a lot of time snuggling our dog Nora and hanging out with my sister Noel.
What were you like as a child?
I was a super creative and active kid. Always coloring, picking flowers, playing house or fairies, riding my bike and imagining!
What’s one thing that people may not know about you?
I make most of my own hair, body and make-up products. Including face wash, shampoo/conditioner, hair gel, body wash and lotion.
What does PLAY mean to you?
Play is so extremely important to me. As a kid there was never a time when my sisters and I weren’t playing. Play has made me who I am today and it allowed me express myself creatively and helped me learn about life. I’ll always be a kid at heart and play will always be a part of my life.
