Our Mommies on a Mission campaign has been a great success so far!

To date, we have sold over 300 ‘Reminder to Play’ sets and have raised $2,731 toward building a playground in Afghanistan. Our campaign finishes on June 17th, so you still have time to help build a playground for children in need of a safe place to play.

The ‘Reminder to Play’ set is a special limited-edition design from Peekaboo Beans made just for women. The design team worked hard to come with a universally flattering design that fits all unique body types. The ‘Reminder to Play’ jacket features toggles on the inside that enable you to cinch in the waist, or leave loose. The back of the jacket covers your bottom and the front sits perfectly at the bottom of your hips. Also featured are deep pockets and thumbholes to provide comfort and warmth.

The ‘Reminder to Play’ leggings are made to have you feel controlled and comfortable at the waist without digging in. The unique cuff at the bottom of the ankle lets you change up your style.

Our fit models loved trying on the garments, commenting on comfort and unique features such as the polka dot details inside the hood of the jacket. A favourite aspect of the jacket is the quote inside that will remind you every day that play nourishes your mind and body – both children and parents.

Let us help you choose your size!

Making Changes to Help us Grow Stronger

Here at Peekaboo Beans we are constantly learning and growing and today we have an important message to share with you about our tween line CiCi Bean.

CiCi Bean was born out of the idea that tweens need to be confident in their bodies and in what they wear; that size shouldn’t be what matters. While this idea was full of love and purpose, the tween market is extremely broad and quite hard to break in to. We’ve learned so much along the way, and we now realize that what we do best in the world is Peekaboo Beans.

Knowing this, we have decided to tuck CiCi Bean away for now and focus all of our attention and resources into making Peekaboo Beans a stronger and more thriving brand. By focusing all of our resources into Peekaboo Beans we can put more into our baby collection and add more styles up to size 10 for both boys and girls.

This may seem like a sad day, but CiCi Bean is just taking a break; it may not be gone forever!

In order to clear out our current CiCi stock we have put everything CiCi on sale!

Place your order now because all CiCi Bean will be removed from our website on Tuesday, May 26th.

Thank you for sharing this journey with me, I value each and every one of you!

In love and play,

Rachel Rainbow for Peekaboo Beans - Winter 2014

We are so excited to have Rachel Rainbow, our very own Peekaboo Beans Assistant Designer, design an exclusive line of Rachel Rainbow pieces again for Peekaboo Beans' winter 2014 collection!

A bit about Rachel Rainbow:
Rachel Rainbow is handmade in Vancouver, BC, featuring hand painted wooden beads, handmade tassels and quality brass magnetic closures and charms. We chose magnetic closures to promote independent dress-up while bracelets feature an adjustable tie to ensure the perfect fit. Rachel Rainbow was born as a creative outlet and is created for pretending.

The Rachel Rainbow pieces this season have been custom designed to
coordinate with the Peekaboo Beans Winter collection. From the colour
pallet to the whimsical butterfly charms these necklaces and bracelets are
the perfect match to seamlessly accessorize your holiday Beans!

We asked Rachel to give us an insiders peek into her process of designing the latest pieces for Peekaboo Beans. Check it out below!

"I like to work from simple materials - cotton embroidery floss for the handmade tassels, nylon cording for the necklace string, and raw wooden beads that I transform with custom mixed colours. I love the freedom to transform these into something that speaks to what Rachel Rainbow is about. For this collection I sourced gold plated brass butterfly charms to tie the necklaces into the theme. This was my first venture into charms for Rachel Rainbow, which has definitely opened some doors for my new work. I also incorporated gold accents throughout in the nylon cording and tassels. All the colours in this collection of Rachel Rainbow necklaces are inspired by the Winter 2014 collection."

"All the beads in this collection are wood and colours are mixed and hand painted by me. This collaboration had a total of 900 hand painted wood beads! I created a very organized assembly line using toothpicks and a long piece of wood to line up the beads to dry. Each bead requires 2-3 coats of paint and 2 coats of varnish."

Peekaboo Beans' mission is to help all kids get back to play & together we raised an amazing $2,300 towards building a new safe place for children to play! Happy Boxing Day Shopping!

It's time to give.

No matter what, whether I am happy, sad, down, blue, gracious or any other of the multitudes of emotions us women experience, giving to others makes me happy. Making others smile makes me smile.

I have been watching the tragedies of Hurricane Haiyan and I feel helpless. Sometimes the world feels so big and I wonder, "How can I contribute and make a difference?"

I've learned from one of my mentors, Darrell Kopke, that you have to find what you are passionate about and make a choice as to how you can contribute. Align with your values and you will drive impactful, positive change. It is up to you to find your voice, discover your passion, and pursue it. He says, "I drive a V8, so I'm not saving the world by driving the vehicle I do. I do, however, invest in socially responsible companies while being a stand for profit and for people."

In his words, "You can't suffer for the suffering," but you can help be part of change. Follow what makes you naturally curious, it will lead you to your passions and purpose. This is how you will best affect change.

So I declare my contribution through Peekaboo Beans:
  1. To be a stand for the importance of play: I will be relentless in my efforts to educate about the importance of free, unstructured play for our children and future generations. I will make a product that supports a playful life.
  2. To give back to play: I will create opportunities to raise awareness and funds to build safe places for less fortunate children to play in through our charity partner: Playground Builders.
  3. To be a voice for working women: I will create a working environment for mothers that provides the space to be a mother first while being a creative and knowledgeable contributor to a society of meaningful work.
  4. To foster a community of entrepreneurs: To extend this mom-focused working environment, I will strive to build out an entrepreneurial platform that allows mothers the opportunity to stay at home, earn income, and be entrepreneurial on their own terms.

This month, you can help give the gift of play with our Playground Builders' "Purple and Green Hoodie" campaign. Buy a green "On the Go" or a purple "I Heart Play" Hoodie at a reduced price and $5.00 will go to buying the following pieces for a playground:
  • Swing set: $488
  • See Saw: $381
  • Bench: $74
  • Slide: $391
  • Monkey Bars: $73

By choosing to align with Peekaboo Beans you are standing with us as we choose to make a change. Together, we are:
  1. Giving the gift of play, for your children, my children, and children around the world.
  2. Giving the gift of change - through the voice of PB.
  3. Giving the gift of ethics in manufacturing practices.
  4. Giving the gift of supporting the local economy.
  5. Giving the gift of making a difference in the world. One Bean at a time.

What could be more perfect? Buying local, supporting the worldwide community, and all in the comfort of your own home! Does it get better than that?

Happy BEANiversary to us!

What happened in 2005:
  • (Bird Flu) H5N1 strain of Avian Flu claims more lives in Indonesia and other countries around the globe;
  • Microsoft releases the Xbox 360 gaming console in North America;
  • Hurricane Katrina devastates much of the U.S. Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, killing thousands and costing over $100 billion in damages;
  • Apple announces iTunes 5;
  • Canada becomes the fourth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, after the bill C-38 received its Royal Assent;
  • Steve Nash becomes the first Canadian player to win the NBA MVP Award;
  • Wayne Gretzky is appointed executive director of Team Canada for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy;
  • Michael Jackson found not guilty on all 10 counts during his child molestation trial;
  • After a lockout, which wiped out the entire 2004-05 NHL Season, NHL hockey returns to play; and
  • Peekaboo Beans was born.
Not from some Ivy League scholars, smoking cigars and discussing what the latest apparel trends are for children; or by a multinational "fast fashion" company looking to expand their market...

It was all started by a Mom. A Mom who wanted something better and questioned the fundamental needs of children starting with what they wear everyday.

From the spare room of my sister in law's house, to the basement of my home. From a small little warehouse, to our corporate "Playground" today.

Our vision and mission has never wavered:  "Let Kids Play".  Play is the work of childhood.

Play is becoming a lost art.  We must stand up and ensure our children play - for the future.

Thank you does not measure up to what I want you to know about how I feel about your dedication to Peekaboo Beans.  Thank you is something quick off the tongue that seems appropriate to say.  But it doesn't say enough - for you are helping this little Canadian company ensure we make our mark on the world:
  • By being a stand for a product that won't hit the landfill because it is made better;
  • By being a stand for ethical manufacturing processes;
  • By being a stand for a workforce where Moms can be celebrated and embraced in our "family first" culture;
  • By being a stand for play. The simple elegant practice of learning and growing without strings attached.
Peekaboo Beans is what children ask for by name.  Children do not have filters; they can't tell you a lie.  They can only share what is pure and necessary. Beans make them feel good and happy.

So, here we are. We make clothes so children can play.

The choice to be an entrepreneur is not the easy path in life, but even just one happy bean in the world is the fuel that drives us forward everyday.  Let there be a land of happy beans sprouting up everywhere so they can play and we can smile.

Playfully and gratefully yours,

Free Beans for you from our brand new Fall Collection... With All My Heart.

Today... there is LOVE in the air!
Welcome to our official Fall Collection Launch!

There is so much that we can learn from children.
Unconditional love.
Forgiveness.
Acceptance.
Wonderment.
Peacefulness.
And the list goes on. Children are continually absorbing lessons from their natural environment and exuding what the natural world has to offer. In fact, as Magda Gerber wrote "be careful what you teach. It might interfere with what they are learning." The glimmer in a young child's eyes reminds us of the fresh and untainted perspective that they have. Everything they see is new and filled with possibility. Children have an innate warmth towards others and love unconditionally. Even when faced with a disagreement they are, most often, quick to forgive and show warmth and affection. This, "With All My Heart" embraces these instinctive and open-hearted qualities of children. The primary colours and the peaceful symbols of this collection remind us of the primary values and traits, of which children remind us - love for all people and things.

Purpose beyond profit - Traci's interview with Institute B.

PURPOSE BEYOND PROFIT: TRACI COSTA ON THINKING OUTSIDE THE SANDBOX
posted on May 1st by Institute B

institute B tagged Traci Costa, Director of Play at Peekaboo Beans to find out how this young growing company, that hasn’t been able to pay market rates to date, maintains such an incredible culture of employee loyalty. Out of the 29 people hired within the organization since it’s inception, only 2 have ever left.
Peekaboo Beans is a company passionate about Play that designs and manufactures Playwear for Children on-the-grow.  The inherent desire of children is to play and it has been proven to be more meaningful than most people imagine. Playing teaches us about boundaries, evolves our imagination, connects us socially, builds our bodies and expands our thinking.  Peekaboo Beans is a stand for unstructured, free play so children can learn and grow into  healthy human-beans.
institute B: What does a culture of generosity mean to you?
Traci Costa: It means treating people the way you would want to be treated.  It means fostering happy people, by fulfilling life goals and believing in dreams.  It means creating positive work environments, where change is embraced and goals are supported.
How would you define the company culture at Peekaboo Beans?
Peekaboo Beans is creating a new way to work, by blending life and work together, particularly for working mothers and families.  We foster a completely flexible work environment, so “no one misses a field trip”.  Our first core value is “Family First”.  We have an environment where children can be brought to work and play in our oodles of Play Space.  Where we can arrange for you have groceries delivered to your door.  Work at your desk, while getting your hair done, or have an in house massage to help manage the stress of working and being a mama!  My goal is to be a one-stop environment, focused on all things family.  In house play-care (work and then have lunch with your wee ones), meal preparation, work out facilities, yoga on the go, dry-cleaning, whatever you need to make life easier!  All while doing what you love and fuelling your passions.
How has this impacted your organization from a business perspective?
I work with highly skilled, motivated, self-starters, who are aligned with the Peekaboo Beans vision.  These amazing people come in to work happy, positive and work hard and play hard.  We have grown at rapid rates because we are all aligned with our vision to create possibilities for the future.
You stated you want to be a stand for creating the best working environments that fosters people, values, and gives back and is socially responsible. Why is this so important to you?
Because there is a new generation of working women.  We still want the old school “stay at home mom” qualities that our parents had, yet we have fostered educations and careers before our children were born.   It can be hard to change an organization that is already established, but we have the ability to be a grass roots brand that is a stand for the future and what working women (and families) need.  I have two girls, I want this for them when they go out into the workforce and one day possibly have families of their own.  I also believe that we need to support community because the world is only successful if we are impacting families other than our own.
It’s fair to say you don’t pay high wages, yet your employee retention rate is outstanding. How do you account for this?
We have been a young growing company, and haven’t had the ability to pay market rates to date.  Our retention rate is high because we value people and treat people well and value our core values of “family first”.  At the end of the day, money isn’t everything.  People wanted to be valued for their contributions and be honored for their values and treated well.
Is there a relationship between branding and culture? Do elements of your culture extend to how you communicate your brand?
I believe that branding and culture are married.  I believe this because when people talk about Peekaboo Beans, they are often not talking about our awesome product.  They are talking about how we are helping build playgrounds in war torn countries such as Afghanistan, through our “Play it forward” campaign with our Partner, Playground Builders.  Or how we have created the best work environment to help ground families.  Or that we have created a tribe of passionate mothers and an entrepreneurial opportunity, selling Peekaboo Beans under our direct sales platform.  Our product speaks for itself, and our sales have doubled every year, but it is also because our culture is what propels us into the future.
Finances and resources are tight for many entrepreneurs, especially if you’re a start up. Practically speaking, how can a young business afford to be generous?
Think outside the sandbox.  Recognition is important and key.  I may not have been able to pay someone a top wage, but I have the ability to send someone to the spa, or give them a little gift of thanks.  Our work environment can be very “touchy feely”.  Each of us has a secret admirer, and the requirement is to leave small tokens, or little gifts, and notes of appreciation (in secret).  Who doesn’t want to get a little treat!   We have recognition jars, that staff can write notes of acknowledgement to each other for hard work done, progress, or just to lift someone up, when they have something going on.  We have theme days, where we dress up and do fun activities and yes – we have tea time every day at 2 (with cookies, of course).  It doesn’t cost much, but makes for a great environment.  We are always laughing and having fun and we support each other when times get tough or challenging.  We allow everyone to have a voice.  We have learned to bring all our “background conversations” to the table, be heard, move forward and progress.  Everyone feels they have a voice and are supported in a safe environment of learning.
Can a business case (ROI) be made for companies thinking about adopting a culture of generosity?
My belief is that culture is created based on the values of the organization.  We post our values throughout the office. When people are rooted by their values, your return on investment is a natural bi-product because your people are self motivated, guided and work hard.  They get to fulfill their creative life passions, whether that be balancing a bank statement, designing a full collection, creating marketing initiatives or answering the phone in a fun playful way.  It all matters.  It all counts.  It all makes a difference.
